Student Voice

I don't typically let go of the reigns too often with writing assignments for my students. However, it has not been lost on me how much freedom I've had in my own academic writing as I begin to conclude my own Master of Education Degree at MichiganState University. Yes, there are guidelines, expectations, words count minimums and maximums, but if I really reflect, I feel as though I have pushed the boundaries of what I write almost every time. I'm no rebel, I just like to have some wiggle room. I know that my students want and need that too.
So, as I move from less of a student back to more of a teacher, I will keep this important aspect of writing in mind. Student voice is so important in the writing process. I feel sometimes that I probably mourn the loss of all the essays not written because of the constraints we as teachers put on students than celebrate the strictly structured, neatly formatted, outlined five paragraph essays required by the curriculum, turned in on time and on task.
This is a link to one of the last pieces of writing I'll do at MSU in this MAED program. It is a far cry from what I have written previously, but I can see the evolution as I reflect on my work and process. Enjoy!
